Scarborough Adult Learning Center wishes to thank Julie McLeod, permaculture instructor from The Resilience Hub/Portland Permaculture, for teaching her inspiring Saturday workshop, "Can it Be? No-Dig, No-Weed Raised Gardent Beds". We wish to thank Julie, as well as her adult students for contributing materials for the organic beds, which were then donated to Scarborough High Lifeskills program students, for use in growing vegetables. Donations included seaweed from Higgins Beach, coffee hulls from Kennebunk's Coffee by Design, compost from Garbage to Gardens/Scarborough High's lunchroom composting program, leaves raked from Wentworth school, granite dust from a neaby quarry (a permaculture secret!), grass clippings and more from adult students. The resulting "keyhole" garden bed is designed to take advantage of microclimates resulting from slopes in nature, and provide learning opportunities for students related to permaculture.
